HealthBridge, a network of 40+ clinics across the UK, needed a unified patient portal to replace a patchwork of outdated systems. Patients were frustrated by phone-only booking, paper-based medical records, and the inability to communicate with their care teams digitally. HealthBridge engaged Tyche Labs to build a secure, HIPAA-compliant portal that would modernise the entire patient experience.
The Challenge
The clinic network operated on three different legacy systems that couldn't share data. Patients had to call during business hours to book appointments, leading to a 35% no-show rate. Medical records were scattered across paper files and incompatible databases, making it nearly impossible for doctors to get a complete patient history. The new portal needed to unify all patient data, integrate with existing NHS systems, and meet strict healthcare data protection regulations — all while being simple enough for elderly patients to use without assistance.
Our Solution
We designed and built a fully accessible patient portal using Next.js with server-side rendering for fast initial loads and optimal SEO. The backend was built on Node.js with a PostgreSQL database, featuring end-to-end encryption for all patient data. We created a custom appointment scheduling engine with intelligent slot allocation that reduced booking conflicts by 90%. The portal integrated with existing NHS Digital APIs for prescription management and referral tracking. A real-time messaging system allowed secure communication between patients and care teams, with automated reminders sent via SMS and email to reduce no-shows. The entire platform was built to WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards.
