Android apps that feel at home on Android

Native Android in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, or one cross-platform codebase when you already have an iPhone app or need both. You get an app built for the phones your customers actually use, a Google Play listing in your name, and a plan for each year's Android update.

Problems you shouldn't have to live with

  • Your iPhone app has no Android version

Half of your potential customers are on Android and some are asking. Rebuilding the whole product from scratch feels like paying for it twice, so it keeps slipping.

  • Google Play is stricter than it looks

New personal developer accounts must run a closed test for two weeks before they can publish. The data safety form has to match what the app really does, and policy rejections arrive with little explanation.

  • Apps fall behind every year

Google Play sets a deadline each year for the Android version an app must target. Miss it and you can't ship updates, and the app is hidden from people on newer phones.

  • Thousands of devices, one test phone

An app checked on one handset breaks on budget phones, tablets and foldables, and the one-star reviews land on your Google Play listing where every new customer reads them.

How we solve it

  1. 1

Native Android in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose

Kotlin and Jetpack Compose are the tools Google recommends for new Android apps. We build with Material 3 and adaptive layouts, so the app works on phones, tablets and foldables, and leave code another Android team could pick up.

  2. 2

    Cross-platform when it makes sense

If you need iPhone and Android from the start on one budget, we'll recommend Flutter, React Native or Kotlin Multiplatform and explain the trade-offs honestly. If your iPhone app is already in Flutter or React Native, Android is mostly configuration, testing and store set-up, and we quote it as the smaller job it is.

  3. 3

An Android version of your iPhone app

Your design, back end, API and product decisions carry over. The interface is rebuilt in Compose, because SwiftUI doesn't run on Android, and Apple-only pieces are swapped for their Google equivalents: Play Billing for StoreKit, Google sign-in for Sign in with Apple, Firebase Cloud Messaging for push. Fixed scope from £8,000.

  4. 4

    Google Play launch handled

Play Console set up in your name, the store listing and screenshots, content rating, the data safety form written from what the code actually does, closed testing if your account needs it, and the application for production access.

  5. 5

    Tested on real devices

Every release is checked on a range of real phones and emulated screen sizes, from budget handsets to tablets and foldables, and we watch crashes and slow starts through Play's own Android vitals rather than a third-party tracker.

  6. 6

Kept up to date each year

Each year's target SDK update, new permission rules and Play policy changes are handled under App care, so the app keeps shipping updates and stays visible to people on new phones.

Launching on Google Play

What to know before you launch on Google Play

Google Play works differently from the App Store in a few ways that catch people out. We handle all of this for you, but it helps to know it before you plan a date.

  1. 1

    Personal or organisation account

A Play Console account has a one-time registration fee and needs identity verification. An organisation account needs your company's D-U-N-S number and shows the organisation's details on the listing; a personal account shows the individual's legal name. For a business we recommend an organisation account, opened in your name, not ours.

  2. 2

Closed testing for new personal accounts

Personal accounts created after 13 November 2023 must run a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in continuously for 14 days before they can apply for production access, and answer Google's questions about the test when they apply. Organisation accounts don't have this requirement. If it applies to you, we set up the test track and plan the two weeks into the timeline rather than discovering it at launch.

  3. 3

Policy and the data safety form

Every app on Google Play declares what data it collects and shares, why, and whether it's encrypted in transit, including anything third-party SDKs collect. The declaration has to match the app's real behaviour or the app is rejected, or removed later. We write the answers from the code and the SDK list, not from memory, and check permissions, sign-in and payments against Play's policies before submission.

  4. 4

    Each year's target SDK deadline

Google Play requires apps to target a recent Android version. The deadline moves each year, usually at the end of August. An app that misses it can't publish updates, and an app that falls too far behind is hidden from new users on devices running newer Android versions. This is the main reason an Android app needs looking after even when nothing about it changes, and it's covered by App care.

After launch

Keep it working after launch

Websites and apps need looking after once they're live. App care is the plan most people choose after this, at £450 a month.

Questions we get asked

An Android version of an existing iPhone app starts at £8,000 and takes 6 to 8 weeks. A new Android app MVP starts at £12,000, the same scope shape as our iPhone app MVP. Typical Android apps come in between £12,000 and £25,000; apps with accounts, payments, a back end and several journeys run £25,000 to £45,000. We agree the scope first, then the price is fixed for that scope.
